Located in Sharjah’s historic Art and Heritage Areas, Sharjah Art Foundation activities and events take place throughout the year and include exhibitions featuring the work of Arab and international artists, performances, music, film screenings and artist talks as well as extensive art education programmes for children, adults and families. The Foundation hosts the annual March Meeting and every two years presents the Sharjah Biennial.

Mission and Vision

Sharjah Art Foundation brings a broad range of contemporary art and cultural programmes to the communities of Sharjah, the UAE and the region.

Recognising the central and distinctive contribution that art makes to society, Sharjah Art Foundation cultivates a spirit of research, experimentation and excellence by offering support to artists and art practitioners, while acting as a catalyst for collaboration and exchange within the Middle East and beyond.

Sharjah Art Foundation core initiatives include the Sharjah Biennial, the annual March Meeting, residencies, production grants, commissions, exhibitions, research, publications and a growing collection. The Foundation's education and public programmes focus on building recognition of the central role art can play in the life of a community by promoting public learning and a participatory approach to art.

Inspired by the cross-fertilisation and rich cultural diversity of the Emirates, the Foundation provides both national and international leadership in the production and presentation of contemporary visual arts.

Sharjah Art Foundation is a legally independent public body established by Emiri Decree and supported by government funding, grants from national and international nonprofits and cultural organisations, corporate sponsors, and individual patrons. All events are free and open to the public.

History

Established in 2009, Sharjah Art Foundation (SAF) builds on the history of cultural collaboration and exchange that began with the first Sharjah Biennial in 1993.

Originally modelled on a classic biennial format with artists chosen to officially represent each participating country, the Biennial provided a glimpse into regional and international artistic practice.

Since Sharjah Biennial 6 in 2003, the programme has been led by Sharjah Art Foundation President and Director Hoor Al Qasimi, a practicing artist who received a BFA from the Slade, London and an MA in Curating Contemporary Art from the Royal College of Art, London. Sharjah Biennial is the UAE’s longest running contemporary art event.

In response to a growing interest in contemporary art, Sharjah Art Foundation was created in 2009 as an institution that would ensure continuity with the history of the Biennial while offering a year-round programme of exhibitions and events.

Sharjah Art Foundation Art Spaces were inaugurated with Sharjah Biennial 11, and are used for SAF programmes along with a range of venues that include converted traditional houses in the Arts and Heritage areas of Sharjah.

Sharjah Art Foundation works on a range of core initiatives and programmes that include Sharjah Biennial, March Meeting, year-round exhibitions, Sharjah Art Foundation Collection, Learning Programmes, Film and Music Programmes, artist grants and residencies and a range of community programmes.

Since its establishment in 2009, Sharjah Art Foundation has mandated the preservation of historical sites in the city, and their conversation and conversion to spaced intended to cultivate and catalyse cultural and artistic thinking. It has succeeded in its mandate by reusing these sites for hosting Sharjah Biennials and exhibitions, creating educational, collaborative and working spaces for artists and community members seeking artistic exploration. In recent years, the foundation has been looking at spreading across Sharjah City and Sharjah Emirate, by implementing the same adaptive re-use approach for other modern historical buildings of the 1960s, 1970s, and 1980s, as well as allocating new spaces to respond to exhibition, programmatic and storage needs.

Strong relationships with international institutions and art professionals help support our local programmes, while fostering greater knowledge and understanding of the regional arts and cultural context.

Recent projects include exhibition co-productions or hosting, co-production and international presentations of artist commissions, educational and research initiatives and library exchanges with institutions around the world.

Sharjah Art Foundation is located in the historic city centre of Sharjah near the working port and in an area of traditional souks and small shops trading in textiles, perfumes, spices, home wares, furnishings, family restaurants and roasteries.

Known as the Arts and Heritage Areas, the neighbourhood is characterised by a mix of restored traditional architecture and more contemporary buildings many of which are used by a range of local organisations and institutions that work in the fields of art and culture.

The area is home to a diverse and active community who enjoy its varied offerings and whose participation and engagement in SAF events and programmes is central to the Foundation’s mission.

تقع مؤسسة الشارقة للفنون في منطقة الفنون التاريخية ومنطقة التراث، حيث تقام أنشطة وفعاليات مؤسسة الشارقة للفنون على مدار السنة، والتي تضم المعارض التي تقدم أعمال الفنانين العرب والدوليين، عروض الأداء، الموسيقى، عروض الأفلام، محادثات الفنانين وكذلك البرامج التعليمية الفنية المكثفة للأطفال والكبار والعائلات. كما تستضيف المؤسسة فعالية "لقاء مارس" السنوية وتقوم بتقديم بينالي الشارقة مرة كل سنتين.

الرؤية والرسالة

تستقطب مؤسسة الشارقة للفنون طيفاً واسعاً من الفنون المعاصرة والبرامج الثقافية، لتفعيل الحراك الفني في المجتمع المحلي في الشارقة، الإمارات العربية المتحدة، والمنطقة. وتسعى إلى تحريض الطاقات الإبداعية، وإنتاج الفنون البصرية المغايرة والمأخوذة بهاجس البحث والتجريب والتفرد، وفتح أبواب الحوار على مصاريعها مع كافة الهويّات الثقافية والحضارية، وبما يعكس ثراء البيئة المحلية وتعدديتها الثقافية.

وتضم مؤسسة الشارقة للفنون مجموعة من المبادرات والبرامج الأساسية مثل "بينالي الشارقة" و"لقاء مارس"، وبرنامج "الفنان المقيم"، و"البرنامج التعليمي"، و"برنامج الإنتاج" و المعارض والبحوث والإصدارات، بالإضافة إلى مجموعة من المقتنيات المتنامية. كما تركّز البرامج العامة والتعليمية للمؤسسة على ترسيخ الدّور الأساسي الذي تلعبه الفنون في حياة المجتمع، وذلك من خلال تعزيز التعليم العام والنهج التفاعلي للفن.

التاريخ

تشكّلت مؤسسة الشارقة للفنون في عام 2009 على تاريخ التعاون والتبادل الثقافي الذي تزامن مع بينالي الشارقة خلال انطلاقته عام 1993.

ومنذ الدورة السادسة من بينالي الشارقة في العام 2003، تتولى إدارة البرنامج سمو الشيخة حور القاسمي، وهي بدورها فنانة متمرسة، حصلت على شهادة البكالوريوس في كلية سلايد للفنون الجميلة (لندن) وحصلت على شهادة الماجستير كقيمة في الفن المعاصر في "الجامعة الملكية للفنون" (لندن ). ويعتبر بينالي الشارقة أعرق حدث للفن المعاصر على مستوى الدولة.

نتيجة للإهتمام المتزايد في الفن المعاصر، تم إنشاء مؤسسة الشارقة للفنون في عام (2009)، كمؤسسة تضمن إستمرارية هذا الفن والبينالي، في حين تقوم بتوفير برامج المعارض والفعاليات على مدار السنة.

تم افتتاح المباني الفنية لمؤسسة الشارقة للفنون، تزامناً مع بينالي الشارقة 11، ويتم إستخدامها لبرامج مؤسسة الشارقة للفنون إلى جانب عدد من الأماكن مثل البيوت التراثية التي تقع في منطقة الفنون والتراث في الشارقة.

مؤسسة الشارقة للفنون هيئة عامة مستقلة قانونياً تأسست بموجب مرسوم أميري ومدعومة بتمويل حكومي ومنح المنظمات الوطنية والدولية غير الربحية ومنح المنظمات الثقافية، والشركات الراعية والرعاة الأفراد. كافة الفعاليات مجانية ومتاحة للجميع.

تعمل مؤسسة الشارقة للفنون على مجموعة من المبادرات والبرامج المتعددة مثل "بينالي الشارقة"، "لقاء مارس"، برنامج "الفنان المقيم"، "البرنامج التعليمي"، "برنامج الإنتاج"، وعدد من المشاريع المجتمعية.

تولّت مؤسسة الشارقة للفنون منذ تأسيسها عام 2009 مسؤولية الحفاظ على المواقع التاريخية في المدينة وتحويلها إلى مساحات مخصصة لتعزيز المشهد الثقافي وتحفيز التفكير الفني، ونجحت المؤسسة في هذا التوجه من خلال إعادة استخدام هذه المواقع في استضافة المعارض ونسخ بينالي الشارقة المتعاقبة، بحيث أمست فضاءات للعمل الثقافي والتشاركي تجمع بين الفنانين وأفراد المجتمع الساعين إلى اكتشاف كل جديد في الفن. ارتأت المؤسسة في السنوات الأخيرة توسيع هذه الرؤية بحيث تشمل مدينة الشارقة وعموم الإمارة من خلال اتباع المقاربة نفسها وتطبيقها على المباني التاريخية الأحدث، أي تلك المشيدة في الستينيات والسبعينيات والثمانينيات، بالإضافة إلى تخصيص مواقع جديدة تلبي احتياجات إقامة المعارض والبرامج المتنوعة ومتطلبات حفظ الأعمال الفنية.

تعمل مؤسسة الشارقة للفنون مع عدد من الشركاء من الجهات المؤسسية والثقافية والحكومية بالإضافة الى الجهات المجتمعية، على تطوير وعرض المشاريع على المستويين المحلي والدولي. وتسهم هذه الشراكات في تمكين برامجنا من الوصول إلى جمهور أوسع، والانخراط مع المجتمع المحلي في دولة الإمارات العربية المتحدة والدول الأخرى.

تعمل مؤسسة الشارقة للفنون مع مجموعة من الشركاء المحليين، الإقليميين والدوليين على مشاريع فنية في جميع أنحاء العالم.

تقدم العلاقات الوطيدة مع المؤسسات العالمية ومتخصصي الفن الدعم لبرامجنا المحلية، فيما تقوم بتعزيز مخزون أكبر من المعرفة بالفنون الإقليمية والمحتوى الثقافي.

يتضمن عملنا على الصعيد الدولي بناء وتَرسيخ العلاقات مع المؤسسات، والمنظمات، والفنانين ومتخصصي الفن حول العالم.وتشمل المشاريع الأخيرة الإنتاج المشترك للمعارض أو استضافتها، والإنتاج المشترك والعروض الدولية للأعمال التي تم تكليف الفنانين بها، والمبادرات التعليمية والبحثية، والتبادلات المكتبية مع مؤسسات على النطاق العالمي.

تقع مؤسسة الشارقة للفنون في قلب الشارقة التاريخية، قرب ميناء العمل ومنطقة السوق القديم الذي يضم محلات صغيرة تتداول الأقمشة والعطور والبهارات والأواني المنزلية والمفروشات، كما يحتوي على عدد من المحامص والمطاعم العائلية.

يتميز الحي المعروف بمنطقتي الفنون والتراث، بمزيج من العمارة التقليدية المستعادة، والمباني العصرية التي تنتمي أغلبها لعدد من المنظمات والمؤسسات المحلية التي تعمل في مجال الثقافة والفن.

ويعتبر الحي منزلاً لمجتمع متنوع ونشط يستمتع بعروضها المتنوعة وتعتبر مشاركته وانخراطه في فعاليات المؤسسة، محوراً أساسياً لتحقيق هدفها الأسمى.
